Three new ponds have been created at Etton’s High Meadow site to enhance the nature of the area.
They have been made possible by a generous anonymous donation. The donor wanted to ensure the money was spent on enhancing nature.
The ponds -the largest is one metre deep – are all close to each other and it is hoped will work together to create a new nature landscape on the site.
They have been dug out in the meadow between the main road and the barn and will enhance the site tremendously. A mound has been created with the unused soil in the hope that planting will attract butterflies and other species.
They include a small platform which, in time, could be used for pond dipping sessions for children (and young at heart adults!). There are also gently shelved gravel ‘beaches” and wetland planting areas,
Planting work has already started. Langdyke’s pond expert Mike Horne has been busy putting in around 100 established plants. More will be planted in the coming weeks to add to the diversity.
