Join Wildlife Travel and Langdyke Countryside Trust members for a nature trip to Estonia in May 2027
Following two highly successful natural history holidays to the Vercors in south-east France and Transylvania, Wildlife Travel is arranging another special trip for members of Langdyke.
In May 2027, the group will travel to Estonia to experience the very best of spring wildlife in this beautiful Baltic country, accompanied by botanist Sarah Lambert, one of Langdyke’s Artists in Residence, and an expert Estonian guide.
Late spring is one of the most exciting times to visit Estonia. Birds are courting, meadows are full of flowers, and dragonflies and butterflies are emerging across wetlands, bogs and woodland rides. The itinerary will explore a rich variety of habitats, including coastal wetlands, forest, bog, fen and grassland, each offering opportunities to discover distinctive northern European wildlife.
Wildflower highlights should include the spectacular Lady’s Slipper Orchid, alongside Military, Bird’s-nest and Burnt-tip Orchids, Red Helleborine and Sword-leaved Helleborine. Butterfly and dragonfly enthusiasts can look forward to the chance of seeing species such as Cranberry Blue, Bog Fritillary, Northern Chequered Skipper, Downy Emerald, Large White-faced Darter and Ruby Whiteface.
Estonia is also superb for birds and mammals. The group will search for summer visitors including Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Citrine Wagtail, Red-breasted Flycatcher and Common Rosefinch, as well as White-tailed Eagle, woodpeckers, owls, Woodcock, Corncrake and Nightjar. In Matsalu National Park and surrounding landscapes there may also be opportunities to encounter Elk, Roe Deer, Beaver, Pine Marten, Red Squirrel and Raccoon Dog.
