Is it a bird, is it a plane? No … it’s Torpel- nicknamed the Poet Starling as all his feathers are made of words and phrases from bird poems by John Clare.
He was made for the paper starling murmuration Langdyke is staging as part of the Trust’s first Arts and Crafts Exhibition later this year.
Organiser Judith Good said: “I hope you are all busy making paper starlings to join Torpels flock? He was at Vergette Wood Meadow today enjoying the company of swans, lots of dabbling ducks, robins, long tailed tits, great tits and maybe a marsh tit. Where is his next adventure going to be?
The arts and crafts exhibition is planned for this summer.
And it is hoped that part of it will create a make-believe murmuration of home made crafted starlings.
The overall theme for the exhibition is ‘Thank You Nature’ – a chance to capture and show the sheer joy nature has given us all over the last year – be that in the back garden, on the paths or verges near home or elsewhere in the beautiful John Clare Countryside.
Judith Good said: “We hope that our friends and supporters will find their creative spark during the next few months and get busy – writing, drawing, sculpting, knitting, stitching, painting, collaging, carving, photographing or at any other form of art or craft.”
Judith has created a silhouette of a starling in the hope that it might encourage people to get creative ahead of the exhibition.
She says: “Why not cut out the silhouette of the starling below (my drawing – not necessarily 100 per cent ornithologically correct!) and colour it in, doodle on it, write a poem on it, collage it, stitch it?
“We would like to get as many of these made as possible so we can have our own murmuration at the Exhibition.”
