Langdyke volunteers have carried out the first work on the Trust’s new Christ’s College nature reserve.
They undertook a variety of tasks – one of the main being collecting some of the 1000+ tree guards and wooden stakes that are surplus to requirements, because the trees inside them died a few years ago.
The plan is to re-purpose some of them in Deeping Gate parish, where the parish council has been awarded 450 young trees from The Woodland Trust but doesn’t have a budget to buy the necessary stakes and tree guards.
The volunteers also cleared a section of the northern edge of one of the lakes – so that visitors looking over from the Maxey Cut can have a great view of the reserve. They also made a start on creating hibernacula out of the fallen trees.
There are more work parties planned for the reserve if you want to get involved. There will be a chance to volunteer for either a morning or afternoon session – or to bring lunch and stay all day.
The next work party events are on January 18 and February 8. Volunteers can join either a 10am to 12:30pm session or a 1:30pm to 4pm session – or simply stay all day!
