An environmental project set into life by Langdyke has won a local council an award.
Castor Parish Council won the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Association Of Local Councils (CAPLC) Award for Environmental Projects for its work on Nature and Wildlife habitat reinstatement.
The award was the result of a ten year project spearheaded initially by Langdyke and championed by Mike Horne.
The nomination submission for the award is summarised here: “Castor Parish Council have been involved in a ten year project spearheaded initially by the Langdyke Trust. Over the past three years we have made great achievements with our own nature recovery projects.
“We began with a piece of land unused for many years that we tackled by clearing dead trees, constructing a pond, planting wildflowers and creating a sitting circle for our schoolchildren to experience forest schooling from time to time. Over the years we have planted hedgerows with the guidance of PECT.
“We are now working on another piece of Parish Land that we would like to be nominated for this award. ̃The Paddocks’ on Splash Lane – parish council land previously used as a horse field now transformed with the planting of oak, black poplar and willow.
“We have replaced gates and now have fencing to be used for sheep at some times of the year. We have built with the help of volunteers a water harvester, plan a pond and wet land area and have bird and bat boxes positioned within the small field. The work has been coordinated with Mike Horne, he has done most of the physical work by also using working groups from major local companies.
“The project is not yet finished but we hope to open the area up to the public in future to enjoy the nature and the natural environment which we feel has been and will be created for the future.”
