This is the view inside a compartment of the Sand Martin nesting box at Etton.
It has left Langdyke volunteers wondering if it was the actual nest of a Sand Martin or another bird.
The nest was found during the annual clean out of the nesting boxes which are on the edge of a water area next to Langdyke’s Vergette Meadow.
After an appeal for help on Langdyke’s Facebook page Nene Park’s Chris Park confirmed it was a Sand Martin nest.
He wrote: “ Definitely Sand Martin. I think this is the 42 chamber box designed and built by Nene Park Trust, based on the Ferry Meadows ones. If it is then it’s good to see it has been used.
”We cleaned out the Ferry Meadows boxes the other week and there were 40 dead young. We think it’s because the weather turned cold and wet very quickly at the end of last summer.”
This was the only chamber that was used at Vergette Meadow, but it appears that hopefully at least one bird bred successfully.
